activist. Kagawa wrote, spoke, and worked at
length on ways to employ Christian principles in the ordering of
society and in cooperatives. His vocation to help the poor led him to
live among them. He communicated this theme, and lived it, so
eloquently, ÒNot everything in manÕs life is summed up in the
question of food.Ó

Back-Story And PeterÕs Thoughts On This Poem
Annie Johnson Flint was born in 1866. Her mother died in 1869. At
the same time AnnieÕs father had an incurable disease, and he died
while Annie was still very young. Before he died Mr Johnson sent
Annie, and her sister,
to live with a widow.
But, it was not a happy
arrangement. Later,
Annie, and her sister,
were adopted by Mr &
Mrs Flint. They loved
the girls and provided
them with a good but
modest home. But,
their adopted parents
were frail and they
soon passed away.
It was around this time
that Annie was
informed by her Doctor
