theory about the decline of religion in the
Western world. The conventional wisdom is that the West Þrst
experienced religious decline, followed by the decline of the family.
Eberstadt shows the reverse is also true: the undermining of the
family has further undermined Christianity itself. She asked this
question, ÒIs it in societyÕs interest to encourage Christian
practice?Ó She provides her own response. ÒOnly so far as it is
societyÕs interest to encourage quality of life, enhance health,
happiness, less crime, less depression, and other such beneÞts
associated with religious involvementÓ.
