Fanny Crosby (1820-1915)
Hymn Writer
Fanny Crosby became totally blind six weeks after her birth, the result
of a careless medical doctor. Over her lifetime she gave the world an
amazing gift of maybe 8000 hymns and poems with more than
100,000,000 in print. The exact number is unknown. My family, as
have millions of other families, sang some of Fanny Crosby hymns
almost weekly. Her hymns and poems spoke a powerful message,
and her own story was most remarkable. Some of her hymns we sing
almost weekly. Many of which you may be able to sing by memory.
To God Be The Glory, A Wonderful Savior, Redeemed Redeemed,
He Hideth My Soul, Pass Me Not O Gentle Savior, Jesus Is Tenderly
Calling, Draw Me Nearer
And many many more. Each of her hymns showed us ways to
successfully pursue happiness and enjoy GodÕs love.
Below is a poem she wrote when she was only 9 years old. Just a
small example of her life and attitude.
ÒOh, what a happy soul I am!
Although I cannot see,
I am resolved that in this world
Contented I will be.
How many blessings I enjoy
That other people donÕt!
To weep and sigh because IÕm blindÓ
I cannot, nor I wonÕt!
